Bookmarks in long PDFs

In a long document, bookmarks give every reader, including keyboard and screen reader users, a way to jump to a section. Acrobat's own check flags documents of 21 or more pages that have none.

Let Word create them

If your Word document uses real heading styles, saving as PDF with "Create bookmarks using: Headings" ticked (in Options) generates bookmarks automatically.

Add them in Acrobat

Open the Bookmarks panel. In a tagged PDF, the panel's Options menu offers New Bookmarks from Structure, which builds them from headings. Keep names the same as the headings.
